It was set in the desert town of Perfection, Nevada, which was under government protection due to the presence of the endangered creatures known as Graboids. The series followed the residents as they dealt with these large earth-burrowing worms and their variations, along with government agents, real-estate developers, and experiments from the scientists who created the Graboids.
