The show was a Western drama set during the gold rush days of 1849. It followed the journey of a young boy named Jaimie McPheeters and his con man father, Dr. Sardius McPheeters, as they traveled west on a wagon train from Kentucky to California. Based on Robert Lewis Taylor's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the series depicted their adventures and hardships during this historic migration.

The cast included Kurt Russell as Jaimie McPheeters, Dan O'Herlihy as Dr. Sardius McPheeters, and Charles Bronson as Linc Murdock. The show also featured Donna Anderson and the Osmond brothers—Alan, Jay, Merrill, and Wayne—playing members of the Kissel family.
