It aimed to depict her relationships with legendary figures such as Paul Robeson, Billie Holiday, and Orson Welles, highlighting her navigation of stardom amidst Jim Crow laws and racial discrimination.

The series was planned to be produced by CBS Television Studios and Secret Hideout. It was inspired by Horne’s favorite poem, Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, and intended to tell her story within a historical context, emphasizing her contributions to American culture and civil rights.
