The series has run for a total of 14 seasons, and has inspired three feature films. The fourteenth season of the main series was announced in March 2022, and premiered in November 2023. A Broadway musical based on it opened in 2017 to critical acclaim.

SpongeBob has a childlike enthusiasm for life, which carries over to his job as a fry cook at a fast food restaurant called the Krusty Krab. The owner of the restaurant is a miserly, greedy red crab named Mr. Krabs who talks like a sailor and runs his restaurant as if it were a pirate ship. His best friend is Patrick Star, a dimwitted yet friendly pink starfish who resides under a rock.
