It followed Gabe Kotter, who returned to his old high school as a teacher, tasked with managing a class of unruly remedial students known as the Sweathogs. The show depicted his humorous efforts to connect with and teach these underachieving, wisecracking students, drawing on his own past as a former Sweathog.

The cast included Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs as Freddie 'Boom Boom' Washington, Robert Hegyes as Juan Epstein, Ron Palillo as Arnold Horshack, and John Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino.
