It was based on a story about a middle-school student, Ushio Aotsuki, who discovers a dangerous yokai trapped beneath his family's Shinto temple. When he releases the creature, named Tora, he finds himself caught in a battle against supernatural foes, with Tora serving as both an enemy and an unlikely ally. The series depicted Ushio's struggles to protect his loved ones from various supernatural threats, including the awakening of a powerful yokai named Hakumen no Mono.
