The series took viewers to the churches of the Deep South to examine its roots in African-American gospel traditions. It featured commentary from artists like Gregory Porter, Chuck D, China Moses, and Salim Washington, who shared their thoughts on influential performers from the 1950s and 1960s. Archive footage of legendary musicians such as Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Mamie Smith was also included.
