Mermaid Forest was a drama anime series that premiered in 2003. It was based on an ancient legend about mermaids' flesh granting immortality. The story followed Yuta, who, after unknowingly eating mermaid flesh 500 years earlier, traveled across Japan in search of a mermaid who could restore his humanity. When he finally found one, he discovered that she and her companions had been raising a girl to be their food so they could consume her and maintain their youth. Yuta ended up killing the mermaids and rescuing the girl, Mana, who had been trapped her entire life. Although he had to kill the mermaids, Yuta was not disappointed, as his loneliness was finally over. Together, Yuta and Mana sought more mermaids in hopes of becoming human again.
The show had a runtime of approximately 25 minutes per episode.
