It followed the story of Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier working as a foreman and chief engineer, who initially sought revenge for his family's murder during the Civil War while navigating the challenges faced by the laborers, prostitutes, and mercenaries living in the mobile encampment known as "Hell on Wheels".

The series featured a cast led by Anson Mount as Cullen Bohannon, with Colm Meaney playing Thomas "Doc" Durant, and Robin McLeavy portraying Eva. Other main characters included Mickey McGinnes, Elam Ferguson, Sean McGinnes, Thor Gunderson / The Swede, and Psalms.
