Carlos Ghosn was born on 9 March 1954, in Porto Velho, Brazil. He was born in Beirut, Lebanon, where he studied in France and Paris. He graduated as an engineer from the École Polytechnique in 1974. He spent 18 years at Michelin, Europe's largest tire maker. In 1985, he was appointed chief operating officer (COO) of Michelin's South American operations. He turned around the operation, which was unprofitable and struggling under Brazil's hyperinflation. The division returned to profitability in two years. In 1999, he visited Norway to launch the new LEAF Alliance with Vladimir Putin.
