Jay C. Smith was sentenced to death in 1986 for the 1979 murder of Susan Reinert and her two children, Karen and Michael. His conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania in 1992, based on findings of judicial and prosecutorial misconduct. Smith was the principal of Upper Merion Area High School in Pennsylvania when Reinert was murdered.
