James David Rodríguez Rubio was born in Cúcuta, Norte de Santander, Colombia, in 1991. He started his career at Envigado, and then moved to Argentina side Banfield in 2008. In 2009, he became the youngest foreigner in Argentine football history to score a goal in Argentina. In 2014, he moved from AS Monaco to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of £63 million, beating Radamel Falcao as the most expensive Colombian football player. In 2017, he signed for German club Bayern Munich on a two-year loan deal. He captained the Colombia national team in the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cup.
