Alice Roosevelt was the eldest child of U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt and his only child with his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt. Alice was born February 12, 1884, in the same house as her mother, Martha "Mittie" Bulloch Roosevelt, who died of typhoid fever, died 11 hours earlier that day. Theodore left Alice in the care of his sister Anna, known as "Bamie" or "Bye" after Theodore's death. Alice became a celebrity at the age of 17, and at her social debut in 1902, she wore a social gown of what she became known as what she wore.
