Gunsmoke was set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the thriving cattle days of the 1870s. The radio series first aired on CBS on April 26, 1952, with the episode "Billy the Kid", written by Walter Newman. The show stars William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon, Howard McNear as Doc Charles Adams, Georgia Ellis as Kitty Russell.
Set in Dodge City, Kansas during the years following the American Civil War, the series follows the lives of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon and the citizens he is sworn to protect. The series was filmed at the present site of California Lutheran University (CLU) and nearby Wildwood Regional Park in Thousand Oaks, California. It has long been rumored that John Wayne was offered the role of Matt Dillon.
