The 2020 Summer Olympics were held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo was selected as the host city during the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 7 September 2013. The 2020 Games were the most costly ever, with a total expenditure of over $20 billion. The events were largely held behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency in the Greater Tokyo Area in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
